Perimenopause: You’re Not Imagining It

Perimenopause and Midlife

Perimenopause and midlife can be incredibly frustrating, knowing that something has changed in your body, but being told, “You’re just getting older,” or “This is normal.” Yes, perimenopause is a normal transition—but feeling exhausted, anxious, overwhelmed, unable to sleep, gaining weight despite doing everything you always have, experiencing brain fog, or simply not feeling like yourself should not be something you are expected to quietly accept. I have worked with so many women who came into my office frustrated, exhausted, and desperate for someone to listen. They knew their bodies had changed, but they weren’t getting the answers they needed. And the truth is, I understand their frustration because I was once part of the problem. For years, I practiced conventional medicine and did the best I could with the education and tools I had. But I often found myself looking at women who were struggling and wishing I had more to offer them.

That realization changed everything for me. I started seeking out additional education and specialized training in women’s health, hormones, and functional medicine because I knew there had to be more to the story. I learned to stop looking at a woman as a collection of lab values and symptoms and start looking at the whole person. I learned that a lab result being “normal” doesn’t necessarily mean a woman feels normal. I learned to ask better questions—to look at sleep, stress, nutrition, movement, metabolism, inflammation, medications, lifestyle, menstrual patterns, and hormonal changes, and to understand how these pieces interact. Most importantly, I learned to listen differently. Sometimes the most important piece of information isn’t found on a laboratory report; it’s found in a woman’s story.

You are not crazy, you are not lazy, you are not failing, and you are not simply “getting old.” Your body is changing and it deserves to be understood. My passion for caring for women through perimenopause and midlife comes from knowing firsthand how easy it is for women to feel dismissed during this stage of life. I want my patients to feel heard when they walk through my door. I want them to understand what is happening in their bodies and why. And I want them to know that there are questions we can ask and possibilities we can explore. Functional and integrative medicine gives us the opportunity to look beyond the obvious, search for contributing factors, and create a personalized plan for this chapter of your life. You deserve more than being told to “just live with it.” You deserve someone willing to look deeper.
